| Maps | Sites in the gazetteer are listed alphabetically by county and unitary authority as finalized in the late 1990's. Sites are included if there is evidence either from archaeology, aerial photography or from written sources. In many cases no remains are now visible and the visual evidence is often aerial photographs or objects in local museums.
The Gazetteer is divided into these sections Southern England & East Anglia (87k download) Central England (76k download) Northern England West (64k download) and Northern England East (87k download) Scotland South (98k download) and Scotland North (57k download) Wales (77k download) |

Gazetteer Entries
The entries contain: English name of the site, Roman name where known, four figure Ordnance Survey map reference, bibliographic references, the type of site, occupation period and military units associated with the site and links to regional maps of sites. English names follow those on the Ordnance Survey's Map of Roman Britain - 4th edition or where more recently identified the usage adopted in Britannia. Alternative modern names are cross-referenced. Roman names normally follow Rivet and Smith, The Place Names of Roman Britain, unless more recent research suggests other names. Garrisons or units associated with sites primarily follow Holder, The Roman Army in Britain, but Jarrett, Non-legionary troops in Roman Britain, Britannia XXV (1994) has also been used. Unit names are the final one where known. For example Legio VI Victrix Britannica Pia Fidelis received the title Britannica under Severus and Pia Fidelis under Domitian.
